Signs of Hail Damage on Your Roof?

Hailstorms can be extremely destructive. The larger the hail, the more damage it can do. Most hail storms last only a minute or two – but even in that short time can effect a lot of damage. Since your roof is only as functional as its weakest shingle, it’s so important to have it inspected after each storm.

How does hail damage a shingle roof?

When hail hits a roof, it may knock the protective granules off of the shingles. This type of damage leaves the shingle’s base material exposed to the sun’s damaging UV rays. In a short amount of time, the shingle can no longer keep water flowing down the roof. If left for too long, the shingle may actually become water absorbent and act as a funnel for water to the decking and underlayment. Damage of this sort will look like a bruise.

Larger hailstones can crack your shingles. A cracked shingle immediately acts as a funnel to the decking and underlayment. Cracked shingles need to be replaced immediately to prevent further damage to the roof and the interior.

Have a professional look at your roof.

For the untrained eye, noticing a dark patch on a dark shingle may be difficult. A professional roofer is trained to spot hail damage and help you decide which course of action to take.

Don’t wait.

There’s no reason to put off tending to your roof. It’s better to know where you stand than to wait for a leak to start.
