You might think that roof leaks would be easy to find, but the causes are not immediately obvious. In fact, plenty of leaks are not spotted until later on. If you are looking for the culprit, is likely one of these four causes:
1. Broken Shingles
It’s easy to see broken shingles from afar, but it is also pretty common to overlook this common issue. It only makes sense that broken shingles lead to leaks. They do make up the outermost layer of the roof after all. You can stop a leak in its tracks by looking for missing or broken shingles. Shingles typically break when the roof is too old or a storm has recently come through. Replacing shingles often fixes the problem.
2. Unsealed Valleys
The valley of your roof is the area where two flat planes come together. Rainwater runs down these pieces into the valley, which is flat. If you do not have a valley that is sealed tightly, water from rainstorms can make its way into your home. You are likely to spot unsealed valleys when you examine the interior seams of your roof and notice wet spots. Sealings often break or crack due to erosion from weather or other roof work.
3. Clogged Gutters
Gutters that are clogged with leaves, branches, and other items actually allow water to soak through your roof. A roof leak results from the backup of water. One of the best remedies to keep debris out of the waterway, besides cleaning gutters, is adding a gutter cover. It takes careful inspection to spot leaves and other items sticking out of the gutter.
4. Moisture in the Attic
You might notice a leak if there is condensation in your attic. In addition to a leak, you are also likely to notice signs that mold is growing by a musty odor and stains. Your attic experiences a wide range of temperatures, and the result is moisture leaking into your year round living spaces.
There are plenty of ways to spot a roof leak, and there are quite a few causes of these leaks as well. Spotting the problem early on can save you from the costs of roof repair and replacement. The earlier you spot problems, the better.
