10 Steps to Improve the Energy Efficiency of Your Home

With the holiday season behind us and cooler weather at hand, January marks the perfect time of year to evaluate the energy efficiency of your home. Energy efficiency comes in many forms – here are 10 that we came up with to get you started on the right foot.

1. Attic Insulation

Whether you are building a new home or in need of additional insulation on an older model, blown-in insulation can be extremely effective and easy to install. When the insulation is blown in, it is able to fill in all gaps and areas, creating a barrier keeping your home insulated from the elements.

2. Shingle Roofing

Roofing has a lot to do with the energy efficiency in your home. A solidly insulated roof keeps out the elements in the winter, and reflective shingles can help to lower the stress on your air conditioning in the summer.

3. Energy Efficient Windows

There are so many incredible new models of energy efficient windows available on the market. You can also install storm windows instead of replacing all the windows to get an extra barrier between your home and the elements.

4. Exterior Doors

Check your exterior doors for gaps around the door jamb to see if any air is getting through. This can be sealed up with weather-stripping. Tighten any loose door hardware so the door hangs square.

5. Plugs and Switches

Put your hand up to a light switch or outlet in your home and see if you can feel any air getting through (be careful, though!). You can put gasket covers in-between the switch plate and wall to seal up leaks.

6. Energy Star Rated Appliances

Taking the time to research appliances that are energy efficient can save a ton of money on electric bills over the course of the year.  From refrigerators to water heaters, each bit of savings adds up!

7. Light Bulbs

When you are putting in new light bulbs, use ones that are energy efficient. Fortunately, for those who do not enjoy fluorescent lighting in the home, many incandescent bulbs are also made with energy efficiency in mind. When leaving a light on for security when you are out of town, there are timers available that will turn the light off during the day to save on electricity.

8. Plugging Leaks and Sealing Ducts

The heat and air in your home runs through a series of out-of-sight ducts. Have these ducts checked for leaks, and seal up any unnecessary areas to prevent energy loss.

9. Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat will allow you to reduce unnecessary heating or cooling times when no one is at home – or when everyone is asleep.

10. Get an Evaluation

There are many companies that offer professional home energy evaluations. These can be extremely helpful to pinpoint regions in the home with the most energy loss.  A professional evaluation can also provide you with a list of ways to improve your home as well as a savings estimate for each home improvement area.
